In my opinion, Samantha can be considered a “new” student with
mild mental retardation. Because she has “good long term memory,
excellent attention skills, good social skills, and can express herself
verbally, I believe she has what it takes to learn. HOW she learns
will be the key to success for this child. Obviously, she does have
a mental deficiency and suffers from a clinical disorder. However,
she also has what it takes to learn! Patience and perserverence are
two of the most important issues to face when working with
Samantha. Learning is not her problem area - storing information
is! The teacher absolutely MUST identify how to get information
from Samantha’s short-term memory, into her long-term memory.
